If you’re not, here’s a couple tips to get you going...
App-ly Yourself. I complained to a writer friend the other day that I’m much more productive when someone is waiting for me to submit. I too easily forgive myself for missing my made-up deadlines. She suggested using the Commit App to remind me to write and guilt me if I haven't been. Has anyone used this or another app like it? I’d love to hear what tools you find helpful!
Start. Seems pretty logical. If you want to write a story, start writing. That first page seems to be one of the biggest obstacles among the writers I know. So here’s one of my favorite story starters: Make a list of people. It doesn’t matter who, just write the list – car salesman, neighbor, piano teacher. Do this for about 10 minutes. When you think you’re done, do it some more. Then pick two of these people – preferably ones that don’t normally interact with each other – and write a scene. If you need help picking a setting, use the mall because everybody ends up going to a mall at some point in their lives. If you do this exercise, I’d love to read it!
Now, no more excuses. Write!
